In Season 11, April who is the dominate christian character in the series, and her husband Jackson are having a baby. Unfortunately their baby has been diagnosed with a genetic disorder: Type II of osteogenesis imperfecta, in which bones break easily.

This is a great test of April’s faith and how she deals with the information presented to them. Jackson is obviously upset with this news as well. He looks at finding out about their baby’s condition as a good thing so that they are ahead of the problem and can save their baby from a life of pain - if the baby makes it though delivery. Jackson sees terminating the pregnancy as the only option that they have. April on the other hand is hoping for a miracle. She does not understand why God would punish her, when she has done everything right. At first April is against the abortion. She  struggles with the idea of making an ultimate decision when she still feels like holding out for a miracle. Jackson who is an atheist even prays to a God he does not believe in, for his wife in hopes that her God will comfort her in this time of need.

Jackson’s Mother suggests that the best solution would be to have an induced abortion, where they can have him baptized and hold him until he passes away.  They name him Samuel Norbet Avery. This leave many questions in regard to April’s faith. She agreed to an abortion to save her child a life of pain and suffering. Abortion is a topic that most Christians struggle with. Many women are criticized for having an abortion within the Christian community. April had reservations about this option in the show but believed that it was best. They have their son baptized as soon as he is born which is also very important to April.
