The purpose of this website is to pose a question to the readers, “Is there room for religion in the technological age we live in?” With the answers we have about the world today brought to us by science, do we need religion? Do we decide that God is the reasoning for things that happen everyday, like rain, or do we acknowledge what the scientific community has proven to be the cause ? In todays medical field we also have advances that we did not once have. Do we accept the way we are made by God, or do we try to improve on it? Do we Accept God’s plan for us, or do we interfere?

In Greys Anatomy, Religion is not a main theme, although it is a recurring idea. When religion is brought into the show, it is often in a negative light. Most of the characters in Greys Anatomy generally do not associate themselves with a particular faith except for the character of April Kepner who is the one surgeon who has a strong faith.

Other Characters do not explicitly show their religion. The character of Dr. Miranda Bailey is probably the runner up to April on the religious scale. Miranda may send a prayer to God before her surgeries, or she may rejoice and let a ‘thank you, Jesus’ slip out from time to time. The characters of Amelia Shepherd and Calliope “Callie” Torres may also make reference to the religion they were raised in, but this happens very seldom in the series. The other Characters in the show have unknown religions

When Greys Anatomy presents religious views in it’s show(s) it often looks at the restrictions that a certain faith places on the patient.

The doctors are then faced with a question of their own, what is the ethical course of treatment ?  Would you allow a person to die, when you could very easily save them?

The flowing issues will be discussed in further detail within the subtitles of this page:

  • A Jehovah’s Witness’ who needs a blood transfusion to save his life

  • An orthodox Jew who is in need of a porcine valve transplant

  • A Christian who struggles with her faith as she has to decide; for or against an abortion

Purpose:

How is Religion Portrayed?

The Problem: Do we need a religion that limits what we can or cannot do ?
